Your home is precious to you and you put a lot of effort into making sure that you are always taking care of it. However, there are some things that are outside of our control and they can cause serious problems.
One of the biggest problems that many homeowners face, through no fault of their own, is water damage. Water damage can be a variety of things. A lot of it depends on what kind of damage is done. For instance, damage from an overflowing or leaking dishwasher is different from damage as caused by something like a hurricane or sewage back ups.
Water damage itself often takes the form of:
- Sagging ceilings and walls
- Wet floors and carpeting
- Water damage to furniture and appliances
- Sitting water in your rooms
- Electrical damage
Some of these signs of water damage are easy to see (sagging walls or ceilings and wet floors), but some of it may not be (such as electrical damage).
About this Process
While you may not want to hear this, it’s important to remember that water damage is quite often worse than it looks. What seems like a tiny leak can add up an expensive bill in a hurry, so proper diagnosis of the problem and clean-up is crucial to keeping those costs as low as possible.
Possible impacts of water damage include:
Rotten studs and joists: Required for wall, floor and ceiling strength, water damage can quickly destroy the structural elements of your home and require replacement.
Damaged carpet and floor materials: Whether it’s an area rug or plush floor carpeting or even laminate or hardwood flooring, sometimes standing water and leaking water can create serious damage in and below our floors, depending on how permeable the surface is.
Appliance replacement: If your dishwasher overflows, for instance, or your washing machine leaks, you often need to replace the leaking appliance, or those around it, depending on how far the water leak spread.
New wiring and other inner workings: In the case of something external such as flooding from a storm or even a fire truck, sometimes the water damage can be to the electrical systems or plumbing systems, too. This can add up in a hurry!
